As a development coach for the Brisbane Lions in 2010, McRae joined Collingwood as head of development in 2011. Over the course of five seasons, he remained with the club.

As an assistant coach in the AFL and head coach of Richmond’s VFL reserves side in 2016, McRae Craig returned to the club. After taking the side to a losing grand final in 2017, he won the VFL’s coach of the year award and the AFL coaches’ association’s assistant coach of the year award in 2019.
