About LA Council Racist Comment controversy

After recordings of a conversation between Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, Kevin de León, and Ron Herrera, president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, leaked online, the four have been accused of making racial remarks.

A user who has since been suspended initially posted audio of the chat on Reddit few days ago, according to the Los Angeles Times, which published the audio on its website on Sunday. It is unknown who taped the conversation that allegedly took place in October 2021.

On the recording, the group is purportedly heard discussing the child of Councilman Mike Bonin. His father is white, while his son is black.

According to reports, Martinez referred to Bonin’s child as “Parece changuito,” which the Times translated as “He resembles a monkey.” She also mentioned Bonin’s participation in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day procession, travelling on a float with numerous politicians and his kid, and referred to the boy as “an accessory.” She continued by stating that the child was misbehaving on the float and that she and other women had to “raise” the child.

De León stated in his own statement that the remarks were “entirely unacceptable” and that he had “failed to meet the standards we set for our leaders.”

He told the Times, “I regret appearing to condone and even contribute to certain inappropriate comments made about a colleague and his family in private.” I have personally spoken out to that coworker.

Cedillo told the Times he could not recall the conversation, whereas Herrera did not reply to the Times’ requests for comment.

Also on Sunday, Bonin and her husband, Sean Arian, issued a statement in response and demanded the resignations of Martinez, De León, and Herrera.

“We are outraged, enraged, and utterly disgusted that Nury Martinez used vile racial slurs at our kid and expressed a wish to physically kill him. They wrote that it is vile, repugnant, and completely disgraceful.

Their message added, “We love our son, a lovely and happy boy, and our family is in pain tonight. No youngster should ever be subjected to such racist, degrading, and hateful remarks, especially from a public figure. It hurts to think he will one day read these remarks… One of our son’s initial interactions with overt bigotry came from some of Los Angeles’s most powerful public figures. As parents of a Black child, we condemn the entire recorded conversation, which exhibited recurrent and offensive anti-Black sentiments and a concerted effort to undermine Black political representation in Los Angeles. The talk revealed multiple levels of disdain for the citizens of Los Angeles and a cynical, unpleasant intent to split the city rather than serve it.”

Martinez allegedly stated, “They’re rearing him like a white child.” “I thought, this kid needs a spanking. Let me take him around the corner, and I will return with him.”

According to reports, De León contrasted Bonin’s treatment of his son to “whether Nury carries her small yard bag or her Louis Vuitton bag.” According to reports, he also described Bonin as the “fourth Black member” of the council.

The panel also discussed Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, who was the subject of a recall effort that finally failed in August of this year due to a lack of sufficient signatures.

Martinez allegedly stated on the audio recording, “F— that guy,” adding, “He’s with the Blacks.”

After the Times’s story was published, Martinez offered an apology. “In a moment of extreme irritation and rage, I allowed the situation to get the best of me, and I accept responsibility for these remarks. I apologise for that,” she told the Times, adding, “The context of this talk was worry about the redistricting process and its possible detrimental impact on communities of colour.” My work is self-evident. I have worked diligently to guide this city through its most challenging period.”
