Early life
- In 1959, Tyrone Davis moved to Chicago with his father from Saginaw, Michigan. He began singing in local clubs after working as a valet/chauffeur for blues singer Freddie King, where he was discovered by record executive/musician Harold Burrage.
- He failed to register his earliest records for small record labels in the city, billed as “Tyrone the Wonder Boy”. Tyrone was signed in 1968 to Dakar Records by Chicago record producer Carl Davis as part of a distribution deal with Atlantic. Davis suggested Tyrone change his name, which he did by taking Carl’s last name.
Career
When his B-side began to gain radio attention, he flipped his first release, “A Woman Needs to Be Loved.” Davis changed his vocal style with a softer, more pleading tone on “Can I Change My Mind.” That song shot up the charts climbing as high as number 5 on the Hot 100 and spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard R&B chart.
More than one million copies of the album have been sold, and it has been awarded a gold disc. He achieved his biggest hit with “Turn Back The Hands Of Time” in early 1970, which reached number 1 in the R&B chart and number 3 in the Hot 100. Jack Daniels and Bonnie Thompson wrote this disc, which also sold over a million copies and won a gold disc from the Recording Industry Association of America.
In his seven years with Dakar, Davis released about 25 singles, most of them big R&B sellers produced by Willie Henderson. It wasn’t until 1975 that he was able to return to the top of the charts with “Turning Point.”.

During 1982, Highrise changed labels and reached number 3 on the R&B chart and number 57 on the pop chart with “Are You Serious”, produced by Leo Graham and written by L.V. Johnson. A year after Highrise closed, Davis switched to Ocean Front, which lacked the promotional muscle to get behind “Let Me Be Your Pacifier”, arguably one of his best performances.
In 1991, Davis switched to Atlanta label, Ichiban Records, where three albums were recorded, including “Mom’s Apple Pie”. A single album was released in 1994 by Davis on Bellmark/Life Records. In 1996, Davis signed with Malaco Records, the southern-based blues label that recorded him on several albums, but his days as a major chart act were over.
