The Popeyes chain was founded in Arabi, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. It opened its doors on June 12, 1972, as “Chicken on the Run”. Owner Al Copeland (1944–2008) hoped to compete with Kentucky Fried Chicken, but his restaurant failed after several months. Copeland reopened the restaurant four days later as Popeyes Mighty Good Chicken. In 1975, Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken had been renamed. Copeland began franchising his restaurant in Louisiana in 1976. A 500th restaurant was opened in 1985, and the chain expanded to Canada in 1984. Newman acquired a number of franchises in Texas and the surrounding states. In a slower expansion period, 200 new locations were added.
